In 2023, John Logan Majoribanks (Marchbanks) from Scotland was the Heritage Officer for the Clan Logan Society. He spent considerable time, effort and resources investigating the Logans of that Ilk i.e. the Logans of Logan in Ayrshire to try and follow the hereditary line of the last chief. This was Hugh Logan, also known as the Witty Laird of Logan who was part of the paternal line from George Logan of the Ilk. In 1672, following the enactment of “An Act concerning the privileges of the Office of Lyon King of Arms”, by the Scottish Parliament during the reign of King Charles II, families were encouraged to register arms with the Lord Lyon’s Court to make them lawful. Compliance was immediately expected and unlike other countries, this became a law in Scotland with prosecutorial rights for non compliance. Many families did register multiple arms however the Logans only registered one and thus George Logan of Logan became chief of name and arms. John’s work is fascinating and he wrote a report, reproduced below, before he retired from his position in the society.

There is currently no chief of the clan. The Clan Logan Society International held a family convention or “derbfhine” in April 2025 with permission from the Lord Lyon. It was heavily attended by Americans and thus an American was voted as Commander. His role is to find a living chief of name and arms. At this time (June 2025), the vote for the Commander has not been ratified by the Lord Lyon.
